Antarctica: Hercules Bay

At 7 am this morning, the ship arrived and moored at Hercules Bay at the Southern tip of the Eastern coast of South Georgia. We were told that the weather we encountered today is a typical mid summer day in sub Antarctica. The temperature was around 4C, high humidity and low level clouds shrouding everything in a mysterious glow! Hercules Bay is inhabited by king penguins - the largest of the subantarctic penguins - macaroni penguins (nothing to do with pasta, they are feisty little penguins), fur seals, seagulls and albatrosses. One feels like in a fjord, with tall peaks diving straight into the ocean.

Alle 7 di stamattina la nave ha attraccato nella baia di Ercole, che si trova a sud della costa est di South Georgia. Il tempo di oggi pare sia tipico delle giornate estive nella regione sub-antartica: temperatura 4 C, alta umidita' ed una bassa coltre di nuvole che avvolge tutto in una luce misteriosa! La baia di Ercole e' ricca di fauna, pinguini reali (i piu' grandi dei pinguini sub-antartidi) i pinguini macaroni (niente a che vedere con i nostri maccheroni, sono pinguini decisamente combattivi), foche, gabbiani ed albatros. Sembra quasi si essere in un fiordo, le rocce sono alte ed a picco sul mare.
