Antarctica: At Sea

Ship's Coordinates 58.8o South, 49.3o West - direction of travel West/South West

Our stop at the South Orkney Islands was aborted yesterday due to the very rough seas. When the swells are so big that the spray reaches deck 9, you know that we are traveling in rough oceans. A lot of people were sea sick - we have been very lucky so far not to have suffered from the movement. After studying the weather and ocean forecasts, the captain has decided to take a northerly course for Elephant Island, which we should reach early tomorrow morning. This afternoon, we will attend a briefing about landing in Antarctica and tomorrow we should set foot on the island which sits at the very end of the Antarctic Peninsula. As you may understand, not a lot of photo opportunities today, I may post some more from the previous days.

La fermata alle Isole Orkney del sud e' stata cancellata ieri in quanto il mare era troppo agitato. Quando le onde sono cosi' alte che lo spruzzo arriva al nono piano della nave (dove siamo noi) - bisogna ammettere che e' molto impressionante. Tante persone hanno sofferto il mal di mare, noi siamo stati molto fortunati ed a parte mangiare meno, non abbiamo fatto altro. Dopo aver studiato le previsioni del mare e del tempo il capitano ha deciso di prendere una rotta leggermente a nord per Elephant Island, che dovremmo raggiungere stanotte. Oggi pomeriggio andremo ad ascoltare un briefing su cosa fare una volte arrivati in Antartide, domani in giornata dovremmo metter piede su quest'isola che segna l'inizio dell'arcipelago della penisola antartica. Ovviamente qui sulla nave con tanti visi gialli in giro, non ci sono tante occasioni per belle foto, provero' a mandarne un po' dei giorni precedenti.
